Tour Duration: 7 Hours
Experience the Private Cappadocia Silver Tour, exploring the depths of Derinkuyu Underground City, the beauty of Soganli Valley, the ancient ruins of Sobessos, and the historic Greek town of Mustafapaşa.
Tour Itinerary
The Private Cappadocia Silver Tour offers an immersive journey through some of the region’s most remarkable sites. Begin the tour at Derinkuyu Underground City, the deepest in Cappadocia, an ancient multi-level settlement that once provided refuge for thousands of people.
Explore its intricate tunnels, ventilation shafts, kitchens, and communal living spaces. Continue to Mustafapaşa, formerly known as Sinasos, a town where Turkish and Greek cultures once coexisted. Admire the well-preserved Greek stone houses adorned with decorative carvings. Some buildings still feature original frescoes, and the town is home to a significant concentration of classical churches.
During the population exchange of 1923, the Greek inhabitants departed, leaving behind a rich architectural heritage that is still evident today. Visit the Keshlik Monastery, an ancient monastic complex nestled in a green valley. The site includes the Church of the Archangel, the Chapel of Saint Stephen, a large communal dining hall, monks’ living quarters, and a sacred water well.
The monastery also features a hidden chamber with mill-stone doors for protection, along with a secret tunnel and a spy hole that allowed discreet observation. The Church of the Archangel remained in use until the twentieth century, making it one of the few cave churches still active in recent history.
Travel to Taskinpasa, named after the Turkish philosopher Tashun, who once lectured at the local madrasa, now in ruins. The remaining structures, including the mosque and ancient tombs, stand as fine examples of Seljuk architecture. The traditional village houses here reflect a unique design, where the ground level served as stables, helping to insulate the upper living quarters
Explore Sobessos, a recently uncovered Roman-Byzantine archaeological site, which is still under excavation. The site reveals remnants of a once-thriving city, including a church, tombs, a bathhouse, and well-preserved Roman mosaics. The discovery of this settlement is an exciting development in Cappadocia’s archaeological history.
The journey continues to the Soganli Valley, home to ten rock-hewn churches with well-preserved wall paintings from the 10th to 13th centuries. The valley is also famous for the locally crafted Soganli dolls, a tradition born from a mother’s sorrow after losing her child. Over time, village women perfected the craft, creating these handmade dolls while their husbands tended to livestock in the mountains.
A Soganli doll makes for a unique and meaningful keepsake. Lunch is served in the scenic Soganli Valley, where you can enjoy a variety of authentic Turkish dishes, including Sac Tava, a traditional Anatolian specialty.
