Priene Ancient City, Miletus Ancient City, Didyma and the Temple of Apollo
Explore the ancient cities of Priene, Miletus, and Didyma. Discover the grid-planned ruins, ancient theaters, temples, and the famous Temple of Apollo on a full-day journey.
Depart for Priene, the first city in the ancient world to be built following a grid system. Set dramatically on the hillside of Mount Mykale, Priene offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient urban planning.
Visit the well-preserved theater, the Temple of Athena designed by the famous architect Pytheos, the Bouleuterion (council chamber), the Agora, and the Altars of Zeus and Cybele.
Continue to Miletus, one of the principal cities of the Ionian League and a thriving center of philosophy, science, and trade. Miletus was the home of Thales, who, according to ancient historians like Herodotus and Eudemus, predicted the solar eclipse of May 28, 585 BC.
Thales is regarded as one of the first astronomers to study the solstices and to calculate astronomical phenomena. In Miletus, explore the impressive Delphinium, the Nymphaeum, the grand Roman theater, and the Faustina Baths built during the reign of Marcus Aurelius.
After lunch at a local restaurant, proceed to Didyma to visit the Temple of Apollo, one of the most significant oracle centers of the ancient world. Marvel at the massive columns and grand remains of this sanctuary, which once rivaled the Oracle of Delphi in importance.
